Dharohar Vernacular Architecture Studio is a Jammu-based design practice dedicated to the living building traditions of the Shivalik foothills and the wider Jammu province. Founded with a simple conviction — that the most intelligent architecture is the architecture already perfected by generations — we design homes, homestays, temples, farmhouses and institutional buildings that feel inseparable from the land they stand on.
Our work begins with the site and its people. We study sun paths over the Tawi, wind movement through the Trikuta slopes, monsoon behaviour, soil composition and the craft skills still alive in villages around Akhnoor, Bhalwal, Ramnagar and Kishtwar. Those observations become the brief — not a style applied from outside, but a response grown from within.
Material honesty is central to our practice. We work extensively with mud brick, rammed earth, lime mortar, dressed local stone, deodar and kail timber, slate roofing and bamboo. Every specification is chosen for how it ages, how it performs and how easily local masons can repair it decades later without imported systems or specialist dependency.
Sustainability, for us, is not a certification badge but a natural outcome of vernacular thinking. Thick thermal mass walls, shaded courtyards, ventilated roof voids, deep verandahs and water harvesting are built into the plan from day one — reducing energy demand while keeping interiors comfortable through Jammu's harsh summer heat and damp winters.
